“Scowlin Owl are a female folk band, low on tweed but big on drama and vocal harmonies. Their ‘strange folk’ is influenced by storytellers from the classic (Dylan, The Band, The Roches) to the contemporary (Decemberists, Midlake, Villagers). The band released their debut EP ‘These Strange Companions’ at the end of 2013 to some great reviews and radio play including the BBC Sunday Folk show. They have also made an impact on the festival scene, playing Wilderness and SoundTracks Festivals in 2013, and are due to play Edinburgh Fringe in 2014.

Any story or concept which inspires them may become a song – their setlist includes tunes about the 2011 tsunami, macabre preachers, the Japanese John Wayne, squirrels and inter dimensional travel in North London. Scowlin Owl is Nina Lovelace (vocals, acoustic guitar, flute), Yvonne Bordon (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar), Karina Zakri (vocals, bass), and Sally Gainsbury (violin, vocals). The band will also be supported at the Borderline by drummer Tim Bazell, formerly of americana band Norton Money.
